The day has finally arrived my first outdoor real world snow skiing experience. I am lucky that a friend from work who has skied for many years has offered to come with me, otherwise I wouldn’t know where to start. Which I am truly grateful for. We head off from the hotel to Loser, Bad Altaussee. You can read my Loser Skiing Review in a dedicated article in Skiing Destinations.
We look at the piste map and go for run 13a accessible from the mid station on the gondola. The other blues need a ride on a chairlift so I go for the easier option.
We purchase our six day Schneebären lift passes, I get to use the lift pass pocket in my Oosc jacket and it works a treat as I pass my arm next to the reader. Off we go, well when my mate eventually gets through the barriers. I am excited and a little nervous. It is snowing lightly and it has been snowing on and off since we arrived which is a good sign, thank you Ullr the norse god of skiing..
We arrive at the mid station and get our skis on ready to set off the dusting of snow throws me off at first, I just need some speed. After a photo opportunity we set off properly, following the blue 13a marker. It is very quiet other than a couple of hikers and sledges it is just my mate and me.

The run is wide and gentle and I am enjoying the freedom of the longer run, I even tackle with bends with ease, the peace and quiet is nice but I keep thinking someone is behind me, but it turns out it is the sounds of my own skis in the snow. We ski for a bit then stop all the way down. As we get towards the end of the run, we must have strayed onto a red run, as there is a steep section, in a slight panic as my speed increases, my head goes “turn to slow” as my lessons kick in, as I do, my skis go from under me and I hit the deck, well soft powder. I get up and my thumb hurts I must have bashed it, I can bend it and it’s pointing where it should, well it isn’t dislocated or broken. I try ski a bit more but end up in some deep powder, so walk back to the bottom.
